The American Sailing Association was founded in 1983 by Lenny Shabes, who was not only a sailor but also a creative mind who had lived several lifetimes and had adventures all around the world. He was a master storyteller whose natural impulse upon starting ASA was to kick it off with a magazine called Passages. The magazine provided an opportunity to teach sailing skills, feature affiliated schools, and highlight exciting destinations around the world. The magazine had a successful run for several years and was discontinued as the organization focused on developing its own library of sailing textbooks.

Passages allowed ASA to get in front of sailors who had never heard of the organization. Copies were sent to sailors and schools all over the world and helped spread the word of a new certification program where students could learn skills in a formal course. Forty years later, we are restarting the print magazine as the world evolves into a maze of screens. The articles are chosen from content written for our premium online subscription. The magazine highlights popular articles and provides a physical copy you can keep on your boat, desk, or coffee table. We hope that the articles inspire you, enlighten you, and challenge you to get out on the water.
